Supporting Industry Transition Through the eMixer Discovery Programme
“Tarmac is leading the way in sustainable innovation within the construction industry. The launch of our eMixer Programme is an exciting step towards making the shift to zero-emission vehicles smoother and more accessible for our suppliers.”
Ben Garner, Head of Logistics at Tarmac
Tarmac’s commitment to decarbonising construction logistics advanced further in 2025 with the launch of its eMixer Discovery Programme, an initiative introducing five new electric concrete mixers into its fleet. Developed in partnership with Renault Trucks and McPhee Mixers, part of TVS Interfleet, the programme reinforces Tarmac’s leadership in delivering practical, lower carbon solutions as the industry moves toward zero‑emission targets.
The eMixer Discovery Programme is a key part of Tarmac’s long‑term strategy to transition to a fully electric fleet. It builds on the company’s pioneering work in 2022, when it introduced the UK’s first fully electric concrete mixer, a project enabled through Tarmac’s supplier innovation challenge in partnership with Renault Trucks and TVS Interfleet, and funded by CRH’s innovation fund. The initial pilot vehicle demonstrated the potential for electric mixer technology in real‑world construction settings and laid the foundations for the wider introduction of electric mixers across the business.
Supporting Suppliers Through a ‘Try Before You Buy’ Model
Building on the early success of the 2022 vehicle, Tarmac is now introducing five additional electric mixers. These vehicles will play an important role in helping supply chain partners transition to electric vehicles by offering a practical, lower risk opportunity to understand how electric mixers perform in everyday operations.
Through a six‑month leasing model, supplierscan operate an electric mixer within their own fleet, allowing them to evaluate range, charging requirements, vehicle performance and operational suitability before making long‑term investment decisions. This approach supports suppliers in building confidence in electric HGV technology while helping accelerate industry readiness for zero‑emission logistics.
Supporting Veterans into Fulfilling Careers
Through close collaboration with armed forces organisations, Tarmac supports veterans and reservists as they transition into civilian careers, providing flexibility for training commitments and acknowledging the leadership, resilience and transferable skills they can contribute.
A Step Toward a Lower‑Carbon Construction Industry
The new electric mixers will contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cutting urban noise and improving air quality, helping Tarmac and its partners make tangible progress toward net‑zero ambitions. By enabling suppliers to experience the operational benefits of electric vehicles directly, the programme helps remove barriers to adoption and strengthens sector‑wide capability for cleaner construction transport.
Supplier collaboration is central to the programme’s impact. The initiative extends Tarmac’s approach of working closely with OEMs and industry partners to accelerate the uptake of innovative, lower‑carbon technologies and embed them within the construction supply chain.
“Tarmac is leading the way in sustainable innovation within the construction industry. The launch of our eMixer Programme is an exciting step towards making the shift to zero-emission vehicles smoother and more accessible for our suppliers. Our ‘try before you buy’ model allows our partners to de-risk their initial transition to electrification.”
Ben Garner, Head of Logistics at Tarmac
Ben continued:
“Our approach ensures we lead by example, making meaningful contributions to reducing carbon emissions, reducing urban noise, and improving air quality. While others may make promises, we’re delivering real, tangible progress that contributes to our Net Zero strategy and benefits our customers.”
Roger Clarke, Renault Trucks UK and Ireland Head of Electromobility and Customer Advanced Solutions, said:
“We are delighted to support Tarmac’s pioneering drive towards sustainability as they offer their contractors the opportunity to trial electric mixers in real world operation through the eMixer Discovery Programme. The expansion of their electric concrete mixer fleet not only accelerates the adoption of zero emission transport solutions but also sets a benchmark for the construction industry, driving progress across the sector.”
Costin at Concrete Haulage Limited, who are operating the first new electric mixer at Tarmac’s Kings Cross site, said:
“At Concrete Haulage, we’re proud to be partnering with Tarmac to take a major step forward in more sustainable transport. Operating this electric mixer is an exciting opportunity for us to work with Tarmac to build the future of transport in our sector in a way that works for our drivers and our customers.”
Looking Ahead
The eMixer Discovery Programme represents a significant step towards a scalable transition to zero‑emission logistics across the construction sector. By enabling suppliers to trial electric mixers in real operating conditions, Tarmac is helping build confidence, reduce risk and speed up the wider adoption of clean vehicle technologies.
The introduction of five new electric mixers strengthens Tarmac’s position as a leader in sustainable logistics and supports its long‑term ambition to establish a fully electric fleet. As more suppliers participate in the programme, the insights generated will help shape the next phase of fleet decarbonisation, support more efficient and lower‑carbon material deliveries, and contribute to the construction industry’s broader transition towards net‑zero operations.
