Scotland, building on a UK First

“Introducing Scotland’s first electric mixer, and one of five now operating across the UK, is a significant milestone in our logistics decarbonisation journey.”

Dan Whiley, National Logistics Optimisation and Development Manager

Tarmac’s progress toward cleaner logistics began in 2022 with the introduction of the UK’s first fully electric concrete mixer. The vehicle demonstrated the practical benefits of zero tailpipe emissions, reduced noise and vibration, and improved air quality, while providing valuable insight that helped shape the development of future electric mixers.

Scotland’s First Fully Electric Concrete Mixer (2025)

In 2025, Tarmac reached another major milestone by introducing Scotland’s first ever fully electric concrete mixer. After a two‑month trial, the vehicle entered full service and has been successfully operating across the Central Belt. This marks a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of construction logistics in Scotland.

Developed in partnership with Renault Trucks and TVS Interfleet, and supported by Scottish Enterprise, the mixer forms part of a wider rollout of electric mixers across the UK. With four additional electric mixers already in operation across England, this newest vehicle strengthens Tarmac’s commitment to cleaner, lower‑emission deliveries for customers and supply chain partners.

How the Mixer Is Making a Difference

The electric mixer is expected to save 42 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The vehicle produces zero tailpipe emissions, helping improve air quality and supporting lower‑carbon construction projects across the Central Belt. It also significantly reduces noise and vibration levels, offering benefits to both drivers and the communities it serves.

Voices From the Team

“Bringing the first electric concrete mixer to Scotland is a proud moment for our teams and our customers. The introduction of this vehicle supports cleaner air, lower emissions and more sustainable deliveries across the Central Belt. It’s a practical step that strengthens our commitment to helping Scotland move towards a cleaner construction future.”
Tom Preston, Readymix Business Manager – Scotland

“Introducing Scotland’s first electric mixer, and one of five now operating across the UK, is a significant milestone in our logistics decarbonisation journey. Each new vehicle takes us closer to a fully lower carbon fleet and demonstrates how we are reshaping our national logistics network to support long‑term sustainability goals.”

Looking Ahead

The introduction of Scotland’s first electric mixer represents an important step in Tarmac’s wider strategy to decarbonise its logistics fleet. With five electric mixers now operating nationwide, the company is building on the progress first made in 2022. The performance of the Scottish vehicle will help inform future deployments and support the continued expansion of electric mixers across the country.

As Tarmac advances towards its long‑term sustainability goals, the lessons learned from Scotland’s first electric mixer will play a key role in shaping the next stages of fleet transformation. This includes supporting customers and partners in reducing emissions, improving air quality in urban areas and moving the construction sector closer to a lower‑carbon future.
