Midlands Sustainability Event: Driving Practical Sustainability Through Collaboration
Our Midlands Sustainability Event at Solihull brought together customers, partners and industry specialists to explore how collaboration can accelerate lower carbon outcomes across construction and infrastructure. The day focused on practical, real‑world solutions, supported by insight into our NextGEN 2030+ strategy and our Midlands‑centric sustainability approach, designed to address local environmental and economic priorities.
Guests took part in sessions covering water resilience, digital tools like PAVE Technology Solutions, and emerging low carbon materials including CEVO asphalt and CEVO concrete. Our on‑site marketplace brought innovation to life, with stalls showcasing aggregate and asphalt solutions, circularity, CEVO concrete and sustainable logistics.
Learning From National Highways: Cutting Carbon on the A64
A highlight of the event was the joint session from Angela Halliwell of National Highways and Matt Fields from Tarmac. They shared learning from the A64 Bramham programme, demonstrating how biogenic binders, warm mix production, carbon negative aggregates and enhanced paving techniques delivered substantial carbon savings, smoother roads and extended pavement life. These improvements contribute to National Highways’ broader progress against its 2030–2040–2050 carbon plan, which includes reductions across corporate, construction and road user emissions.
Customer Perspective: Amey’s Approach to Decarbonisation
We also heard from Samantha Schofield, Amey’s Head of Environmental Sustainability, who outlined the importance of carbon‑conscious design, efficient delivery models, and the central role of the supply chain in achieving net zero goals.
Amey emphasised the need for transparent data, material innovation and strong supplier collaboration to support decarbonisation across surfacing and maintenance activities.
Water resilience was another core theme of the event. India Kalsi from CRH and Nathan Birchenall from Tarmac explored the need for above‑ and below‑ground solutions that respond to increasingly extreme climate conditions. As India highlighted, there are significant opportunities for us to innovate together and develop solutions that better our communities.

The event closed with a clear message: meaningful progress relies on partnership. By bringing together clients, suppliers and technical experts, the Midlands Sustainability Event provided a powerful platform for shared learning and collective action.
