Tarmac sustainable solution to Liverpool2

The Liverpool2 project is expanding the footprint of the port to increase the container storage capacity of the area adjacent to the current terminal. The multi-million-pound project includes the addition of rail-mounted cranes, three ship-to-shore cranes and additional reefer points installed, this will allow the terminal to handle greater quantities of refrigerated containers.
McLaughlin & Harvey were the main contractor appointed, bringing us on board to help with the challenges around the excavation of aggregates on-site. Our technical experts took samples on-site to identify how we could remove almost one metre deep of infill that had previously been placed in phase 1 of the project, and how it could be recycled.
The results determined that we could reuse the material, providing the customer with a cost-neutral solution and divert materials from going to landfill. Our Materials – North West team successfully recycled 99% of the total material that was excavated from the site. The work was completed in a live operational environment, meeting their challenging programme requirements and deadline.
Alongside the challenge of reusing the material, there were additional project requirements, such as large quantities of aggregates, asphalt and concrete. It was vital that the project kept to programme so the site could reopen in time.
In addition, we engaged with our supply chain partners to design a bespoke heavy duty concrete mix suitable for the port. Dama and Adfill worked together to design a mix which included fibre dosing that was successfully trialed. We delivered 13,500m3 of concrete, 48,000t of aggregates and 27,000t of asphalt to the project.
