Families flock to super Stancombe
Otto Karhunen, assistant quarry manager, Stancombe quarry
The team at Stancombe quarry has built a strong relationship with the local community this year by hosting a Heritage open day in September.
Our Bristol site opened its doors as part of a national campaign, offering people the chance to learn about the journey our stone makes – from quarry to building homes. More than 1,000 people attended the day, where they were given guided quarry tours and other fun-filled activities.
Hundreds of children got the chance to see mobile plant in action and have photos taken with the giant loading shovels and pavers.
Otto Karhunen, assistant quarry manager, said: “Talking to our guests it became clear that most people had no concept of what modern quarrying looks like or just how much thought and effort goes into making the construction materials we see and rely on every day, and many didn’t even know our quarry was here despite living within a couple of miles.”
